county's history. ktvu cameras were there as police and sheriff's departments raid nearly three dozen locations. good evening. i'm julie haener. >> i'm frank somerville. as of this hour 18 of the 19 targeted suspects have been arrested during strikes on locations in six bay area counties. ktvu's jana katsuyama went along with one of those strike teams. >> reporter: 7:30 a.m. it started, sheriff's departments, the fbi, doj and 31 other agencies gathered at the alameda operations have to prepare for this strike. inside investigators let us see the central command that would coordinate the raid. >> milpitas, santa clara, daly city. >> reporter: 32 locations throughout the bay area targeting 19 leaders of the suspected prostitution operation. >> all part of this same ring, same operation all executed simultaneously. from this nerve center here. >> reporter: ktvu was embedded with one of the strike teams.

each unit moved into staging areas holding a final briefing before moving in. at 11 a.m. they rolled out. at this san leandro business ming spa customers and one woman was found inside. a strike at one place would be steen at other locations because there are links. the male says he saw customers visiting the spa late into the night. >> it looked like a low budget massage parlor, but the owner drives a mercedes, looks like they have money and always on the phone. >> reporter: throughout the day commanders found cash, drug, weapons and two marijuana grow houses in hayward and concord. >> the growth of these establishments has become an ever increasing problem in alameda county as well as surrounding counties. >> reporter: the district attorney says about 50 women ages 18 to 40 mostly asian are being interviewed to determine

whether they're victims. jana katsuyama, ktvu channel 2 news. more details now on human trafficking in california, in 2013 the national human trafficking hotline received more than 3,000 calls in california. that is the highest call volume anywhere in the country. 63% of those calls were reporting a tip about possible human trafficking. 26% were potential victims seeking help. 7% of the callers said they were in crisis and needed immediate help and 4% of the callers wanted more information about human trafficking. san jose state university reportedly expelled three of four students accused in a racially charged bullying case. initially the four students were suspended after information surfaced they harassed their black roommate for weeks. the students were charged with hate crimes and battery. the three expelled students are banned for life from enrolling

at any california state university college. the fourth student will be  required to undergo counseling and remain on probation if he returns to school. breaking news out of the south bay where a jury announced a verdict in the legal battle between apple and samsung. the san jose jury decided both companies infringed on each other's patents. apple was awarded much less than what it was seeking. samsung was awarded only 158,000 in damages. the jury began deliberating tuesday after a month long trial. new developments in the case of a mother stabbed to death this week, san jose police announced the arrest of 22-year-old gabriel alejo in connection with the killing. ktvu's rob roth learned the suspect and victim knew each other. >> reporter: police arrested 22-year-old gabriel alejo of san jose for stabbing the mother of a baby and twin 9-

year-old girls inside the woman's apartment tuesday. police aren't saying how he is related to the victim, 28-year- old theresa player villa, but he has -- theresa teresa maravilla. but he has the same last name as her husband. neighbors are glad police made an arrest. >> she's not going to see her kids grow up, but i'm glad they caught him. >> reporter: a next-door neighbor told police he saw a man leave the apartment an hour before the body was discovered and that man left on a motorcycle. you saw him walk out? >> yeah. like nothing. >> reporter: police have not provided a motive. the neighbor says maravilla's husband came by this morning and told him this. >> that he was going to move from here, there's no reason for him to be here no more. >> reporter: in san jose, rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news.

investigators say speed may to be blame for a crash that ill canned one person and left another -- killed one person and left another seriously injured. firefighters say the crash happened around 4:00 today at north first street and tasmin drive and involved at least two cars. the driver of one of the cars appears to have been speeding. it has changed his way of thinking. that's what 49ers quarterback colin kaepernick said after he was named in a police report and a woman ended up in a hospital. it happened last month. kaepernick and two other football players were reportedly partying with an unidentified woman at the viceroy hotel in miami. according to the modesto bee, kaepernick spoke in turlock at a prayer breakfast and said it was a bad circumstance, but ultimately "it's made my stronger. it's made me look at things differently. have sparked a house fire this morning at 6:30. a total of four homes were damaged as smoke filled the area. a firefighter suffered chest pains. two people who lived there were treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns. the fire apparently started when a lamp fell over near a mattress. 22 people have to find a new place to live. a plan to widen sidewalks in one san francisco neighborhood is putting the financial squeeze. the construction project in the castro district is meant to make the area more pedestrian friendly. the sidewalks will be dividenned and rainbow crosswalks are going in -- widened and rainbow crosswalks are going in. business owners aren't sure if they can hang on until the work is done. >> reporter: earlier today one man without knowing what our story was about walked up to our van and essentially beg the us to tell people to shop her

because he said businesses are suffer -- here because he said businesses are suffering. one of san francisco's most popular neighborhoods is getting a massive makeover. >> is it is loud, noisy -- it is loud, noisy, dusty. >> reporter: construction crews are more than doubling the size of sidewalks on two blocks of castro street to make the street more pedestrian friendly. >> we know it's going to be nice, but in the meantime we have issues. we have hard time. >> reporter: merchants told us they appreciate the work being done, put many people are not frequenting the area. >> if it continues like this, we'll have to close the door. in the meantime who is going to take care of the expenses? >> economically it's been hurting businesses. >> reporter: april sales for

cliff's variety store were down about 4%. delivery trucks are having a hard time offloading here. >> one guy went on a three-week cruise because he said business is dead. >> reporter: parking is set to be restored the end of june and gay pride. the department of public work says it's helping efforts to promote shopping here. >> we home the economic downturn people might feel from this project won't be long lasting. >> reporter: dpb says better lighting, new landscaping and color for crosswalks will come later in the year to the castro and aren't expected to be as disruptive. a consumer rights law firm has launched a class action lawsuit alleging google is monopolizing the mobile market. the lawsuit accuses google of unfairly preloading its applications on android phones. it artificially increases the price of emotional devices and hatchers competition. the case was filed in federal court in san francisco.

a group of students rejected from uc schools gathered today in protest on the ban of affirmative action. the group today held a stand-in at uc berkeley. they say that the school should admit more minority students like anya ku, a latina, oakland technical high school graduate with a 3.7 gpa, high atc scores and several elected leadership positions. >> there are more latinos like me qualified to intend the university, then why not have an accurate reflection. >> today's protests come after last week's supreme court decision upholding statewide bans on affirmative action. a bay area congressman toured the perimeter of the

airport today to be sure it meets all federal security standards, but the incident of the stow-away has raised questions whether it's enough. the congressman wants to see what technologies can be used to beef up security along airport perimeters such as radar, motion detectors and surveillance cameras. the 15-year-old stow-away snuck onto the tarmac hours before that hawaii bound plane took off. he wasn't discovered until the plane landed in maui. the boy survived extreme temperatures and subfreezing altitudes. he was trying to see his birth mother who lives in a refugee camp in ethiopia. the chp slothing a new push to try to re-- is launching a new push to try to reduce motorcycle deaths. the chp says there's been a dramatic increase in motorcycle crashes and deaths since 2011.

as a result, the agency is partnering with the office of traffic safety to increase education and training for motorcycle riders. >> a lot of people out there that have barely ridden a motorcycle and get on one because they're trying to save money or they can afford a motorcycle versus a car. >> the chp says it's not always the motorcycle's fault. a common crash is when a driver turns right in front of a motorcycle. a chp plane caught him going 120 miles an hour down bay area freeways. now this motorcyclist has pleaded guilty to criminal charms, the one thing he told ktvu he'll do differently next time. yes, next time. >> it's the largest and one of the city's busiest public swimming pools, but it could be closed this summer, the financial realities that could

a man caught doing wheelies at 120 miles an hour on the freeway pleaded no contest today to reckless driving. >> wheelie at 100 plus eastbound. >> last month a chp patrol plane with a powerful new camera spotted a motorcycle streaking south on interstate 80 and then diverting to 580. the 10-mile chase took only seven minutes. today we spoke to the man to ask if he learned his lesson. if you learned anything, what do you think you learned?

>> ride in the fog because planes don't see very well through fog. >> cory mcdonagh was sentenced to three years probation and 20 days on the work squad after pleading guilty to misdemeanor reckless driving. he'll also have to put in 40 hours of public service, pay a fine of $500 either take a safety course or sell his motorcycle. officers wear them to record your every move. now santa rosa police are the latest bay area department to test out body worn cameras. ktvu's paul chambers spent the day looking at those cameras and which other police departments already use them. >> reporter: it's a growing trend in the bay area, officers recording your of move. >> keeps you on your best behavior. it's a great evidence tool for prosecuting. >> reporter: the walnut creek police sergeant started testing his camera a few months ago. >> when we respond to a scene and the scene is dynamic, it's

there ready to go. >> reporter: a flip of the switch and the camera is recording your interaction with the officer. of the three largest bay area police departments oakland is the only one who said all field personnel are using them. most departments in the bay area we contacted do not use cameras. others are testing or planning to get them. for the most part officers say wearing cameras prove helpful. >> the vast majority of cases the officer is exonerated because the video footage or other recordings will exonerate the officer and put his actions in contest. >> reporter: the officers say the pros of having the cameras outweigh the cons. others don't want them at all saying it feels like big brother is always watching. that's why some officers say if they're told to use them, they want it in moderation. >> we all realize it's not a big brother. it's a tool that we could use to basically tell our side of the story. >> we wouldn't want cameras on all the time, both for citizens' privates reasons and the reasons -- privacy reasons

and the moments for our officers needing a moment to decompress. >> reporter: the majority of people believe officers should have the video cameras as long as it's protecting the safety of them and the officers. i invite you to join the conversation at paul chambers tv. walnut creek's largest and busiest public pool could close down most of the year. the clark swim center offers year-round swimming and lessons. nearly 1,000 people swim there every day. city officials say a budget shortfall forced them to consider closing the pool seven months out of the year. the proposal is up for debate at the city council meeting set for next tuesday. firefighters have beaten back the flames of a massive wildfire in southern california. cal fire says the fire burning near rancho cucamonga in san bernardino county is 53% contained. winds are dying down. firefighters expect to make more progress tonight. the fire is smoldering now and

cal fire says there is no active flame left. 1,600 homes were evacuated. we told you earlier this week how cal fire is beefing up staffing heading into the summer fire season. there are currently 400 more firefighters on duty than usual for this time of year. in northern california fire crews are already in summer training. >> in the san francisco bay area we've restricted outdoor burning completely. in some parts of northern california where it's yet not completely dried out homeowners need to make sure they have a burn permit. because of the increasing fire danger we're having to restrict outdoor burning as much as we can. >> cal fire started hiring seasonal crews in january. that is six to eight weeks ahead of schedule depending on the fire station. significantly cooler today as much as 10 or 20 degrees. these are some of the temperatures from yesterday. we had those records and today the numbers are significantly

cooler. santa rosa down a good 10 degrees, livermore down to 88 and santa rosa down to 66 degrees. significant cooling is because of this system moving in off the coast. it's a low pressure system that's allowing the fog to push into the coast right now. that's where the fog came from last night and as the system gets closer it will push more fog inland further each morning. as it does that, the further inland it goes, the cooler we get. as we head into weekend, that's the weather story. how far inland will the fog go? it will go the furthest inland sunday. 14-mile an hour winds now. these winds carry the fog and marine air inland. 22-mile gusts and that's the onshore flow different than where we were. san francisco 55, live picture. there's the fog, not that deep, looks about 1,300 feet deep, but by the weekend it's going up to 2,000 feet.

then it's up over all the coastal hills really far inland. san francisco tomorrow saturday, 63 degrees, not a very warm day. not bad for san francisco but not as warm as it has been. this is that low pressure i was talking about. it nudges closer tomorrow and cools a bit, like today but cooler, mid-70s and then it nuns further south sunday, stretches out -- nudges further south sunday, stretches the marine layer and the fog. sunday is the coolest day in the bay area. yellows are 70s. this is the fog footprint for the morning. what it's done is right there is the cool air, the 60s and all the cool air is getting into the central valley. sunday up in sacramento they're in the mid-70s. so it's going to be a cool day around the state sunday. 70 five in sonoma tomorrow, 77 vacaville, still nice but not as warm as it had been, 68 in
